Beneath the Blue

Beneath the Blue is part of my Metamorphosis collection, exploring transformation, fluidity, and the subtle shifts that occur beneath what we see. This original betta fish painting reflects that sense of quiet change and movement.

Set against a deep black background, the betta fish unfolds in a restrained palette of Prussian blue, white, and gold. The limited colours draw attention to the movement of the fins and the play of light across their surfaces, creating a quiet sense of depth and suspension within the painting.

While painting this piece, I found myself drawn to the calm, flowing movement of the fish. The process became unexpectedly meditative, and this work ultimately became the starting point for a small series of betta fish paintings within the collection. Working with such a limited palette proved surprisingly freeing, allowing the gesture and rhythm of the subject to guide the painting.
